When we talked to customers, we learned that their Starbucks visits are largely related to connecting with friends, family or colleagues. But the coffee market is moving towards making their spaces fast instead of comfortable. We saw an opportunity to create a program that takes advantage of Starbucks' initial philosophy of being a third space for people between home & work. Starbucks Coffee Breaks is a social discount program that encourages customers to take coffee breaks with people they know, leveraging the power of frequent customers bringing along friends, converting infrequent customers to frequent ones.Context — Strategic Innovation in Product / Service Design , SVA IxD
Role — User research, analysis & design with Pam Jue, Shelly Ni & Beth Wernet
<img src="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/sbux1_905_800.png" width="800" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="675" src_o="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/sbux1_905_o.png" data-mid="27011284" border="0" align="left"/>

Starbucks Coffee Breaks rewards customers for bringing in friends — the customer earns everyone in their group a 10% discount off any drink, up to maximum discount of 50% off for everyone. This offer would be open to any customer once a week, and to Starbucks Card members anytime they visit a Starbucks.<img src="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/-1_800.png" width="775" height="541" width_o="775" height_o="541" src_o="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/-1_o.png" data-mid="27011288" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/-3_800.png" width="710" height="372" width_o="710" height_o="372" src_o="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/-3_o.png" data-mid="27011289" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/-4_800.png" width="721" height="482" width_o="721" height_o="482" src_o="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/-4_o.png" data-mid="27011292" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/-5_800.png" width="729" height="469" width_o="729" height_o="469" src_o="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/-5_o.png" data-mid="27011294" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/-6_800.png" width="695" height="461" width_o="695" height_o="461" src_o="http://payload136.cargocollective.com/1/0/9160/5039665/-6_o.png" data-mid="27011296" border="0" align="left"/>

WiiDrawing explores different modes of expression using technology, and combines the disciplines of drawing and gaming. Coming from an illustration and painting background, we wanted to explore different modes of expression using technology. We programmed the wii nunchuck to draw as if using traditional tools as well as exploring drawing styles that could only be achieved using technology.
The largest slum in Kenya and home to some 250,000 people, Kibera was not visible on any publicly available map. The residents had no simple way to engage in conversation about their own local development, or share their own views and aspirations for their community. It is now a complete interactive community project. Trained groups of youth from Kibera use paper mapping methods & technology to create collaborative digital maps using OpenStreetMap and also report on local events on the Kibera News Network.Client — UNICEF

Crabgrass is an open source web application designed for social networking, group collaboration & network organizing. Its goal is to create communication tools that are tailored specifically to meet the needs of bottom up grassroots organizing, and is a secure & privacy conscious alternative to for-profit social networking & organizing platforms. While at UNICEF, I had the privilege of contributing to a few iterations of Crabgrass. Learn more about The Riseup Collective, the creators of Crabgrass.Client — UNICEF

WaterHackathon is dedicated to solving water problems facing developing countries, such as access to safe drinking water & adequate sanitation, flooding & drought (climate change), irrigation & watershed management, and environmental pollution. It is a two-day marathon hacking event that took place in October, 2011, with multiple global locations bringing together software developers, designers and water experts to solve – “hack” – real-world water problems. See some of the activity that took place at WaterHackathon Cairo on their Facebook page.Client — World Bank

The re-design of washingtonpost.com re-structures the critical tool and information source for those who call Washington, D.C. home. The major differentiators are providing flexible solutions for any type of story, truly robust & dynamic multimedia templates that surface many never seen photos, videos & stories, as well as striking a balance of world-class journalism and a local D.C. social resource. As the re-design was never launched, the work below should be considered strategic and theoretical in nature.Agency — The Wonderfactory

Global Pulse is a United Nations initiative to close the information gap between the onset of a global crisis and the availability of actionable information to protect vulnerable populations. These diagrams illustrate the flow of raw data and how the platform would monitor any irregularities to effectively respond to emerging crises. The diagrams were made at an early stage of this initiative, while it was named Global Impact and Vulnerability Alert System (GIVAS), to educate team members and external partners.Client — UNICEF
